Fraunhofer-Institute UMSICHT develops applied and custom-made process engineering technologies. Assuming a leading position in the fields of environmental and material, process engineering and energy technologies, Fraunhofer UMSICHT is committed to sustainable economic development and environmentally friendly technologies.
The objective of the business unit Energy Efficiency Technologies is the intelligent integration of energy systems into existing and new supply structures as well as their efficient utilization. We combine fossil and regenerative energy sources with central and local conversion processes in order to create custom-made, economically and ecologically balanced systems which pave the way for local synergies. The research activities are categorized in three fields

• Energy Storage: investigation and development of electric energy storage, development and generation of hybrid cold/heat carriers as “phase-change material/phase change slurries” (PCM/PCS),
• Polygeneration: Development and construction of ORC plants (waste heat into power), Planning and optimization of CHCP cogeneration plants, development of thermally driven chillers and
• Optimization of Energy Systems: Energy system analysis, benchmarking and optimization of heat, cold and power supply system operations, CO2-emissions management (monitoring/trading), elaboration of feasibility studies

The business unit Energy Efficiency Technologies investigated paraffin-in-water emulsions and encapsulated paraffin in water suspensions as alternative to cold water within an internal Fraunhofer project in 2003. The results of this project showed that these fluids are of interest for cold storage and distribution applications. In subsequent to this project, Fraunhofer UMSICHT worked with industrial partners on a joint project “Development of micro-PCM-emulsions and ionic liquids for heat and cold storage and transportation” funded by the BMBF. Within this project the preparation methods as well as the rheological and thermal behaviour of several PCSs were investigated. The results showed that a paraffin-in-water emulsion was the most promising PCS fluid for cold supply networks. Nevertheless, the emulsion must be further studied in view of subcooling and stability. In 2008 Fraunhofer UMSICHT applied for a patent on paraffin emulsions and their applications as heat transfer and storage medium
